When it’s time to move, you want to get all your ducks in a row. Here at IN & OUT moving we have a couple basic tips to help you make sure that your move is an easy one and a smooth as possible.

Your Moving Checklist

  • Eco Boxes, and Cardboard Moving boxes: Various sizes of sturdy boxes for packing your belongings

  • Packing paper or plastic bags: Use these to wrap and protect smaller items and keep them organized.

  • Colour code or labelling system

  • Markers: Permanent markers to label boxes with their contents and the rooms they belong to.

  • A parking strategy to save space in front of your home, or find out where the truck will park at the condo.

  • Cleaning supplies: All-purpose cleaners, sponges, and paper towels for cleaning your old and new home.

  • Empty Old Trash Cans

  • Change of address forms: Contact your local post office to fill out the necessary forms for forwarding mail.

  • Snacks and water: Keep refreshments on hand for yourself and your movers during the moving process.

  • Toilet paper, often overlooked, but after a long, moving day, you’ll definitely want that on hand at your new home.

  • Personal essentials bag: Pack a bag with toiletries, a change of clothes, medications, and any other essential items you’ll need right away

  • Phone and laptop charger.

Preparing for a smooth and stress-free move requires careful planning and organization. Start by creating a comprehensive moving checklist to keep track of all the essential tasks. Begin sorting through your belongings and decide what to keep, donate, or sell. This not only helps reduce the number of items you need to move but also allows you to declutter your home. Consider scheduling a donation pickup with IN & OUT MOVING or hosting a yard sale to get rid of unwanted items and lighten your load.

Once you have sorted through your belongings, it’s time to start packing. Gather packing supplies such as boxes, bubble wrap, tape, and markers. Start packing non-essential items first, such as seasonal clothes and decorative items. Clearly label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to. Remember to pack a separate ‘essentials’ box containing everyday items you’ll need immediately upon arrival at your new home, such as toiletries, a change of clothes, and important documents.

As moving day approaches, notify relevant parties of your change of address. This includes updating your address with the post office, your bank, utilities companies, and any subscriptions or services you receive. Arrange for your utilities to be disconnected at your current home and connected at your new residence. It’s also crucial to inform friends, family, and important contacts of your upcoming move, so they have your new address and contact details.

To ensure a smooth transition, consider hiring a reputable moving company. Research and compare different moving companies to find one that best suits your needs and budget. Book your movers well in advance to secure your preferred moving date. If you have Condo elevator times to consider, contact building management, and secure your timeslot. Take as big of a swath of time as they will allow you, as even delays caused by them at the beginning of your timeslot, will affect the amount of time you have before the next move in that building will begin. Communicate all necessary details with the moving company, such as the number of rooms, special items, and any specific requirements.

On moving day, be present to supervise the process and provide any necessary instructions.

You’re moving team will work hard for you, please don’t overlook basic necessities, such as offering water. Expressing appreciation for the movers’ significant efforts, it is customary and considerate to recognize their hard work by offering a gratuity. Similar to tipping a waiter in a restaurant, providing a tip to your movers reflects their exceptional dedication and the demanding nature of their work.
